This may come as a shock to most Americans, but over the course of the last few years more Americans have migrated to Mexico than vice versa, according to Mexican and American government data! This is especially shocking, as many Americans have blamed some of the US’ economic troubles on its Southern neighbors. According to the article, For Migrants, New Land of Opportunity Is Mexico from the NY Times “as many Mexicans [moved] north from 2005 to 2010 as those [that returned] south.” Which means that the total number of Mexicans in the US is staying constant, while the number of Americans in Mexico is increasing!
Although China has been a dominant force in the manufacturing industry, Mexico is becoming bigger player for the American market due to logistical proximity to the US and rising labor costs in China. But it’s not only Americans that are running to Mexico to fulfill their perceptions of the American Dream, citizens from all over the world are heading to Mexico in hopes of better opportunities. This is evident due to Mexico’s economic “growth easily [outpacing]…the United States, Canada and Brazil…in 2011 and 2012” according to the International Monetary Fund.
The shift is not complete yet, and Mexico still has a lot of moving parts to sort out before it will become the next China-scale manufacturer. But there is so much potential and possibility in Mexico, that people are uprooting themselves and moving there. The NY Times article went on to explain that there are a large number of Koreans, Germans, Spanish, and other Europeans that have relocated to Mexico. The reason behind this increase in migration to Mexico being the higher number of opportunities, entrepreneurial attitude, and creative spirit that is present there.
So next time you’re considering your day-job and think your losing traction on your career aspirations, learn Spanish and consider relocating to Mexico City, the City of Palaces!
