Why you should learn Russian: With over 250 million speakers worldwide, the Russian language is the 9th most spoken language in the world. It is one of the six official languages of the UN, the official language of the Russian Federation, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and a co-language of many other countries. Considered a priority language by the U.S. government, learning Russian is highly recommended for those that aspire to work in almost any government agency. Learning Russian would greatly benefit anyone exploring opportunities within the Department of Defense, Department of Commerce, Department of Energy, FCC, Homeland Security, NSA, CIA, FBI, etc.
Russia’s history as a global superpower stretches from the Russian Empire and Peter the Great to the rise and fall of the Soviet Union and today’s Vladimir Putin-led Russian Federation. As different trading blocs and cooperation agreements are discussed, such as the “Eurasian Union”, it seems clear that Russia is priming itself for a grandiose return as one of the great world powers. Awakening from its twenty year hibernation, the “Russian Bear” appears intent on returning to its position as counterweight to U.S. influence. This makes Russian an incredibly important language to learn geopolitically. Add to that the fact that Russia is the world’s 9th largest exporting nation, the 6th largest exporter of coal, 2nd largest exporter of natural gas, and the world’s largest exporter of oil—Russia is poised to become a dominant force internationally.
