BRIC Language and Shanghai Normal University

In May of 2012, Shanghai Normal University, founded in 1954 established The School of Finance and Business (SFB) in order to provide a hub for scholars, business analysts, and senior management personnel to teach and to conduct research. There are currently 3,700 undergraduate and graduate students, of which well over 600 are international students coming from over ten different countries around the world.

Shanghai Normal University – SFB approached BRIC Language Systems in the summer of 2013 seeking BRIC Language Systems proven track record of convenient and effective language learning to provide their international students with one-on-one Mandarin Chinese lessons. The combination of the SFB’s rigorous business programs and BRIC Language Systems one-on-one language programs provides international business people the rare opportunity to study Chinese business at a world-class university while also learning to speak Business Mandarin Chinese.

The Chinese Business and Language Certificate program is great for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as those international business people wanting a firm understanding of the Chinese business world. Students receive 20 credits for their coursework as well as a Chinese Business & Language Certificate. Coursework covers the major areas of Chinese business including marketing, finance, and law as well as an intensive business Chinese language course. Students completing the certificate will leave with a well-rounded understanding of Chinese business, culture, and language.

Fall Semester:

• Registration and Visa: Sep 1^st – Sep 7^th, 2015
• Classes Begin:  Sep 8^th, 2015  
• Graduation:  January 16^th, 2016
• APPLICATION DUE DATE: July 31^st, 2015.

Course Structure:

20 Credits total. Nine credits will be awarded for business courses taken and 11 for Chinese language course work.

Business Course:

A total of 9 credits will be awarded following 108 hours of coursework.  Courses will be taught in a lecture hall setting with between 10-30 students.

Courses Include:

1. Marketing in China (3 Credits, 36 Hours): This course explores the marketing strategies of several domestic and foreign corporations and their overall success in the Chinese consumer market.  This is done in the framework of a rapidly changing society and a growing middle class with increasing disposable income.
2. Chinese Trading & Investment or Chinese Financial Markets:
   a) Chinese Trading & Investment (3 Credits, 36 Hours): To provide students with an understanding of China as an emerging economic power in the global market.  The course analyzes the impact of foreign trade and investment in China from a historical, contemporary, and future context.
   b) Chinese Financial Markets (for Finance majors and Financial Industry Professionals; 3 Credits, 36 Hours): Chinese financial market law, regulation, and related supervisory bodies and how they interact and govern the Chinese securities markets, Chinese venture capital, and private equity are the focus of this course.
3. China Business Law & Practice (3 Credits, 36 Hours):  This is a course examining three major areas of Chinese Business law. These areas include introduction to IP law in China, Introduction to Tax Law, and M&A in China.

Mandarin Chinese Language Course:

A total of 11 Credits will be awarded following 96 hours of 1-on-1 training.

Courses will be determined on a student-by-student basis based on the level of language acquisition previously attained.  Please see example coursework for beginning level Mandarin Chinese student:

Level I: PRONUNCIATION – PINYIN, TONES, SURVIVAL VOCABULARY (3 Credits, 32 Hours)

• REQUIRED MANDARIN LEVEL: You have never taken Mandarin or may know just a few words.
• FOCUS: Hanyu Pinyin pronunciation, the 4 tones, basic vocabulary, simple role-playing for greetings, ordering food, taking a taxi, and bargaining.
• LANGUAGE ACQUISITION: Approximately 700 words, using 40 sentence structures.  You will be able to basic conversations.

Level II: LISTENING & SPEAKING COMPREHENSION (4 Credits, 32 Hours)

• REQUIRED MANDARIN LEVEL: You can already use simple sentences.
• FOCUS: Listening, role-playing and communication exercises.  This section covers topics including appearance, personality, giving directions, bargaining, and an introduction to different types of business.
• LANGUAGE ACQUISITION: Approximately 900 new words and 40 sentence structures. You will be able to discuss emotions, personality types, simple bargaining, and simple business.

Level III: BASIC CONVERSATION & CULTURAL TRAINING (4 Credits, 32 Hours)

• REQUIRED MANDARIN LEVEL: You can already hold short discussions in Chinese:
• FOCUS: Conversational Development and the ability to open, hold, and close a casual conversation naturally. Cultural training in order to enhance understanding of and communication with Chinese during practical daily interactions. Topics include banks, the hospital, travel, markets, and the Canton Fair.
• LANGUAGE ACQUISITION: Approximately 900 new words; you will have the ability to tell short stories, give orders, make logical explanations, check in and out of hotels, book tickets, navigate train stations and airports, and be able to speak and understand enough Mandarin to participate in most conversations.

Certificate:

A Chinese Business and Language Certificate will be awarded upon completion.

University students will receive the certificate regardless but should check with their current University to see whether or not the credits are transferable.

Applicants:

• Senior undergraduate, Graduate Students, and Business people seeking a certificate in Chinese Business and Language.
• Applicants must be fluent in listening, speaking, and writing the English language.
