Brazilian Portuguese

Brazilian Portuguese was not included in that graph, but it’s still an important language to learn for your career. More on that below.

According to Kiplinger, learning a new language, especially one less-studied by your competitors in the job market, can increase your chances of landing that coveted job. In fact, in 2014, a half a million job postings in the U.S. requested foreign-language proficiency.

Mandarin Chinese came out on top in Kiplinger’s survey. With 848 million native speakers, the number of job postings was 21,000 in the United States, and 72,000 in other English-speaking countries.

The main language of Brazil – Portuguese — came in at number three, with 9,700 job postings in the United States alone and 15,000 total for English-speaking countries. Portuguese is the fourth-most-popular language that companies are looking for in job candidates. However, most undergrads are learning Spanish instead, so if you know Brazilian Portuguese, you’re already ahead of the pack.

The most lucrative jobs with this language include sales manager with a median salary of $104,000 and marketing manager with a median salary of $110,000.
